Dedicated volunteer honoured in Burnie

02-Feb-2017  Alice McKenzie

The Targa Tasmania community were humbled to hear that one of our very own volunteers has been honoured at this year’s Burnie Australia Day ceremony. Terrance (or as he is known in the Targa community,) Terry Ferguson was named the 2017 City of Burnie Australia Day Citizen of the year with recognition for being one of the region’s most hard-working and hands-on community members. As most of you know, he has dedicated his time to every single Targa Tasmania since its inception in 1992, being only 1 of 11 people that have completed all 25 years of Targa Tasmania. We would like to join in the congratulations and extend our thanks to Terry for all of his hard work, dedication and support of the event.

Growing field as three more of Targa’s big guns head to Targa North West

01-Feb-2017  Alice McKenzie

Respected local and Targa Hall of Famer, David Ayers joins the Targa North West line up in the immaculately prepared Just Jap GTR35. With Navigator Stuart Benson sitting beside him, these two will not only give Kennard’s GTR-35 a major shake-up, but they will have their eyes fixed on the top spot in the hotly contested GT4 competition.

A cross-country journey will see yet another Targa Hall of Famer join the Classic GT competition. Mike Moylan and long term Navigator Don Behets will be travelling from WA to compete in the mighty muscle of his 1964 Ford Thunderbolt coupe. They will be looking to both improve on their 3rd placing in Classic at Targa Hellyer Gorge in 2016 and get their eye in before the massive 6 day charge at Targa Tasmania in April.

It wouldn’t be an Early Modern competition without the sound of a rotary engine tearing up the tarmac. Welcomed addition, Queenslander Mark Balcombe in his 1995 Mazda RX-7 SP will be making the journey down with his ever study navigator Brian Foster. After finishing in second place at Targa Tasmania 2016, followed by a disappointing retirement at Targa High Country, these boys will be looking to re-position themselves as the Early Modern team to beat in 2017 by starting the year off with a podium finish.

Welcome to the Targa North West entry list, and Best of luck.

Targa Tasmania 2017 Course

16-Dec-2016  Alice McKenzie

The 2017 Targa Tasmania course will go down in the events history as the most unique course ever run due to the presence of Anzac Day falling on Day 2, instead of the traditional opening day of the event, as it did in 2006. With the change to a Monday to Saturday format in 2015, that was welcomed by all competitors, the course needs to be configured around this and the obvious need to respect the Tasmanian public on this important day of remembrance, by not closing a myriad of roads normally associated with a full day of Targa Tasmania.

Targa Technical Regulations V2 update

08-Jun-2016  Alice McKenzie

As we do each year after Targa Tasmania, our Safety & Technical Team (STT) discuss any changes required to be implemented for the following year. As custodians of Targa Tasmania, it is in the interest of all to ensure that the event can continue in as safe a manner as possible. Furthermore, the event works tirelessly to ensure that it can meet and exceed the expectations of not only the local authorities but also the local communities, whose support is vital to the sustainability of the event. This process has been updated in the past 12 months to also include the recommendations from the Coronial Inquest and the provisions of the use of the CAMS Tarmac Rally Standing Regulations (TRSR), which were re-introduced to Targa this year.

Please click the link to download the updated technical regulations to be used from Targa High Country later this year. Changes are highlighted in grey for easy reference.

25th Targa Tasmania Course Announced

10-Dec-2015  Alice McKenzie

It will be the largest Targa Tasmania ever held with a record field already entered for the 25th running of the Ultimate Tarmac Rally. It is with great excitement that we release the course that will determine the winners of this historic event; a course that covers just over 500 competitive kilometres and 2,000kms in total, making it long enough to test every car and team over the 38 stages and ensure that a balance between performance and reliability will determine the winners, as it should, in the true tradition of Targa Tasmania.

Even after 25 years, new stages can be found and next year will see exciting new stages at Montumana, Irishtown and Edith Creek on the way to a new lunch stop in beautiful Stanley along with the first ever running of Pelverata (in Targa Tasmania) and Tinderbox to ensure that the last day will throw in some surprises before finishing at our brand new home at Princess Wharf 1 right alongside Salamanca Market, literally whilst the market is on.

New stages are always a great thing to have but Targa Tasmania has built its reputation on the fantastic stages that keep everyone coming back year after year and it would not be a true celebration if the course didn’t include George Town, Sideling, Riana, Hellyer Gorge, Oyster Cove, Longley, Strahan, the mighty Mt. Arrowsmith and of course everyone’s favourite, the gruelling Cethana.

The new year will see many exciting announcements as we countdown towards the 25th running and for those already entered, full reconnaissance notes will be available before Christmas to ensure you have plenty of time to safely prepare for the trip of a lifetime.

Vale - Brendan Manion

01-Dec-2015  Alice McKenzie

Targa Australia has been saddened by the passing of long standing Targa competitor, Brendan Manion.  Known to always greet fellow competitors with a smile, Brendan has been part of the Targa family since 1998, competing in eleven Targa Tasmania's as well as both Targa High Country and Targa Wrest Point events.

Many would recall the wonderfully bold Tiger livery on his recent competition vehicle.

We would like to pass on our sincere condolences to Brendan's family and friends.  We hope that son Ben Manion, will be there to carry on the flame in his fathers honour for many years to come.
A funeral service will be held at 11am on Thursday 3rd of December at the Launceston Football Club Rooms, Winsor Park.

The Smoothline Experience Continues to Deliver Success

27-Nov-2015  Alice McKenzie

With around 60% of the field at this year’s Targa High Country using Smoothline it’s no surprise that the winners of most competitions were using their Stage Notes. When Smoothline’s Bernie Webb presented at the Targa Experience information sessions it was obvious though that their primary focus was anything but outright speed. Bernie’s presentation centred on “understanding the whole process of rallying”, outlining that notes should be an accurate, consistent description of where the road goes while providing the information required to safely negotiate the course.

25th TARGA TASMANIA STORMS THROUGH 300 ENTRIES

15-Sep-2015  Alice McKenzie

In a first for Targa Tasmania (and probably any motorsport rally ever held), Early Bird entries closed on 31st August with more than 300 applications submitted. This is 35 more than at the same time for the 20th Anniversary event, which went on to see 331 greet the start line.

It is fantastic news for the event, Tasmania and of course all those that have entered to date. It promises to be the biggest Targa party ever held and will take in more of Tasmania than ever before and again see the great stages to the south of Hobart determine the winners across all of the competitions.

What this all means is that if you have locked in the dates and plan on coming to join in the celebrations, please do not wait to enter or you may be disappointed. We are expecting the field to be full in the next few weeks.

Vale- Bill Pye

06-Aug-2015  Alice McKenzie

It was with much sadness that we greeted the news of the passing of a proud member of the Targa family, Bill Pye.

Bill was one of the true characters of Targa Tasmania, bringing a determination to the event not seen before him and along with his navigator and mechanic, Grant Geelan, competed fiercely to achieve their goals.

Bill’s battles with Rex Broadbent will always be remembered amongst the great rivalries in Targa Tasmania history.

Competing nine times between 1999 -2010, Bill and Grant racked up a series of podium places with two 2nd places in Classic Outright and the highlight result of a Classic Handicap win in 2007.

Sadly, Bill and Grant had already entered for the 25th Anniversary event next year, to mark their return to the Ultimate Tarmac Rally and Bill was looking forward to his return with planning already well under way to ensure that they were again in the leading pack of competitors.

We would like pass on our sincere condolences to Bill’s family and friends at this difficult time.

A regularity style event in its initial format, the event is designed for the great modern GT cars of the world and will be run in conjunction with the WRC event, from 1st to 4th October.

Targa Australia will be there in a consultancy capacity to assist France’s governing body, the FFSA to run the event and assess what is required to run a full blown Targa event from 2016.

The best part is all of our loyal Targa customers are welcomed to join us on a trip of a life time and with the nature of the roads in Corsica, it promises to be an event like no other where you get to drive the same roads as the WRC cars and get behind the scenes access to one of the world’s great rally’s.

Interested? CLICK HERE for the brochure promoting the event and if you need any further details don’t hesitate to email mark@targa.com.au who can answer all your questions.

Targa High Country Early Bird

13-Apr-2015  Alice McKenzie

Targa High Country Early Bird pricing closes this Friday the 17th April.
Dates 6 - 8 November 2015

Targa High Country was first run in 2010 and now attracts an average field of 200 entries due to its challenging yet scenic roads, as well as being such an easily accessible region.
Based less than 3 hours from Melbourne, Targa High Country is based on top of Victoria's most popular Ski Resort, Mt Buller, some 1,800 meters above sea level. In summer the road to the summit masquerades as one of the most exciting hill climbs in the country and is the gateway to the other rally stages.

In 2015, this event will be held over 3 full days and takes in 22 stages, including the ever-popular Mansfield town stage through the streets of Mansfield centre in front of thousands of fans. Having this event based on Mt Buller offers a unique experience, both on the course and on the mountain.

TIM JONES MEMORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD

27-Mar-2015  Alice McKenzie

With the tragic passing of Tim Jones from Perfect Prints, it has been agreed that in honour of Tim’s incredible contribution to Targa Tasmania that we will be introducing an annual photography award to be presented at the Targa Tasmania Presentation Dinner each year. The Tim Jones Memorial Photography Award will be presented to the photographer who we feel has captured the essence and spirit of Targa Tasmania. This will be open to all photographers, amateur and professional, and doesn’t necessarily have to be an image of a Targa car, with a myriad of moments happening during the event that capture the spirit of the event. In terms of competitor images; it has also been agreed that we will not be entering into another exclusive photographer agreement for all of our events, including Targa Tasmania. This will mean that all photographers are free to photograph the events and commercialise their images as they choose. We will be welcoming photographers to request space at the Presentation Dinner to sell their images to competitors as Perfect Prints have done for the last 23 years, which will give competitors greater choice and an option to arrange their own photographer if they choose. We believe this structure will inherently bring more photographers to our events and see Targa images receive wider distribution, which in turn will increase the events profile.

Targa Hits International Markets

27-Feb-2015  Alice McKenzie

New Offices opened in Europe and Asia

As the 25th Anniversary running of Targa Tasmania approaches in 2016, Targa Australia are ensuring that it will have the largest international field ever assembled for the Ultimate Tarmac Rally with the opening of Targa’s first international offices in London and Tokyo, which are also two of the world’s great cities.

Both regions have incredible car cultures with the London based office also covering all of Europe and the Tokyo office also covering large markets such as South Korea and China.

Event Director, Mark Perry said “Targa Tasmania has always seen international competitors attend but this has dwindled in recent years with the impact of the GFC hitting hard in both regions combined with a too high Aussie dollar increasing costs to travel half way around the world to race your car.  The world’s economies are on the mend, the dollar is down again and enquiries have increased in past year.  Added to this is the obvious drawcard of the 25th event and all it will have to offer so if we want to ensure that we have a good field of internationals, we need to be marketing and planning for this now as it takes a lot of work to facilitate an entry from overseas if they are bringing their car.  We are also working on a number of Targa car lease options where we will source a car locally to make competing in Targa Tasmania much easier for internationals in the future.”

In opening offices overseas, Targa Australia are investing heavily in the future of Targa Tasmania and Tasmania as one of world’s most beautiful island locations to ensure that the events standing in world motor sport is not only maintained but increased.

The new offices will manage every detail for international competitors, from the freighting of their car to their own travel, documents, accommodation and even meals to ensure a complete `one stop shop’ service is provided.

“We have never been able to provide such a service previously, you just need to have people on the ground who can be easily contacted in the same time zone and speak the language to do this and as the years tick by, the uniqueness of Targa Tasmania increases as does our profile internationally so now is the right time to invest heavily in these markets.  It is fair to say that the last few years have been tough ones for the event and it has had tough periods before.  The opening of our international offices is another sign that exciting times lay ahead and this forms part of our commitment when we took over the event that the future would be a bright one and that the Ultimate Tarmac Rally would see much growth and evolution to ensure it remains relevant for many years to come.” Perry concluded.

Contact details for Targa’s new offices can be found on the Contacts tab of our website at targa.com.au

Vale - Keri Simms

Vale Keri Simms

Targa Tasmania lost one of its long serving and hardworking senior officials over the weekend with the passing of Keri Simms. Keri or Kiwi as she was affectionately known, officiated at eleven running’s of the Ultimate Tarmac Rally fulfilling a lifelong dream of being a Stage Director in 2014 in spite of ongoing illness. Keri soldiered on leading her team onto the course each day all over the island to ensure our competitors and officials had a fantastic time wherever they were working. Keri sat on our Board of Management as part of her role thus achieving her goals at Targa Tasmania before sadly passing away.

On the behalf of all Targa competitors and officials, we pass our sincere condolences on to Josh, Sara Ann and family.
