Targa Tasmania 2017 Course

16-Dec-2016  Alice McKenzie

The 2017 Targa Tasmania course will go down in the events history as the most unique course ever run due to the presence of Anzac Day falling on Day 2, instead of the traditional opening day of the event, as it did in 2006. With the change to a Monday to Saturday format in 2015, that was welcomed by all competitors, the course needs to be configured around this and the obvious need to respect the Tasmanian public on this important day of remembrance, by not closing a myriad of roads normally associated with a full day of Targa Tasmania.

Vale- Deirdre Flint- OAM

09-Feb-2017  Alice McKenzie

It is with much sadness that we pass on our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Deirdre Flint. Deirdre was a long-time supporter of Targa Tasmania in her role as Mayor of Central Highlands Council, always ensuring that we had access to the Tarraleah and Ellendale stages along with last part of the iconic Mt. Arrowsmith Stage. Deirdre always made it a point to attend the Targa Tasmania dinner each year and enjoyed the many friendships that she made with the Targa family, including considering competing herself in her own Volvo alongside none other than Ronda Matthews.

Deirdre worked tirelessly for the Tasmanian community, in particular the people of the Central Highlands, and she will be sadly missed by us all.

Dedicated volunteer honoured in Burnie

02-Feb-2017  Alice McKenzie

The Targa Tasmania community were humbled to hear that one of our very own volunteers has been honoured at this year’s Burnie Australia Day ceremony. Terrance (or as he is known in the Targa community,) Terry Ferguson was named the 2017 City of Burnie Australia Day Citizen of the year with recognition for being one of the region’s most hard-working and hands-on community members. As most of you know, he has dedicated his time to every single Targa Tasmania since its inception in 1992, being only 1 of 11 people that have completed all 25 years of Targa Tasmania. We would like to join in the congratulations and extend our thanks to Terry for all of his hard work, dedication and support of the event.

Growing field as three more of Targa’s big guns head to Targa North West

01-Feb-2017  Alice McKenzie

Respected local and Targa Hall of Famer, David Ayers joins the Targa North West line up in the immaculately prepared Just Jap GTR35. With Navigator Stuart Benson sitting beside him, these two will not only give Kennard’s GTR-35 a major shake-up, but they will have their eyes fixed on the top spot in the hotly contested GT4 competition.

A cross-country journey will see yet another Targa Hall of Famer join the Classic GT competition. Mike Moylan and long term Navigator Don Behets will be travelling from WA to compete in the mighty muscle of his 1964 Ford Thunderbolt coupe. They will be looking to both improve on their 3rd placing in Classic at Targa Hellyer Gorge in 2016 and get their eye in before the massive 6 day charge at Targa Tasmania in April.

It wouldn’t be an Early Modern competition without the sound of a rotary engine tearing up the tarmac. Welcomed addition, Queenslander Mark Balcombe in his 1995 Mazda RX-7 SP will be making the journey down with his ever study navigator Brian Foster. After finishing in second place at Targa Tasmania 2016, followed by a disappointing retirement at Targa High Country, these boys will be looking to re-position themselves as the Early Modern team to beat in 2017 by starting the year off with a podium finish.

Welcome to the Targa North West entry list, and Best of luck.

For Sale

15-Jan-2017  Alice McKenzie

FOR SALE - PORSCHE 911SC 1981

After many years of enjoyment I’m selling my Australian delivered, matching numbers, fully registered 911SC. Delivered new to SMA Motors (SA) in May 1981 it comes with original books, service history & $120k+ in receipts. The car won the Porsche Club SA concourse before being converted into a tarmac rally car by Mark Poole Motorsport. I bought the car in 2008 after which it has been stored & managed by Shaun Cairns of WerksRRR in Bayswater, Victoria.

The car has been maintained regardless of cost & recent work includes dog-rings, sliders & new suspension. It has never been in an accident & has zero rust. It's completed Targa Wrestpoint, Targa High Country & Targa Tasmania plus various PCV events such as the Sandown 6 hour. Regularly placed in the top 5 (3rd up Mount Buller in 2014) it has proven to be an extremely reliable & competitive car despite my limited abilities...ha ha...it's finished every event & with all safety equipment (inc fully plumbed firebomb) potential buyers could take it straight to Targa Tasmania in April.

Under the handicap rules the car runs in standard class which means it retains all original body panels / glass & has minimal modifications, eg Boxster brakes. As a result the car could continue its career as a tarmac rally car or be easily converted into an IROC racer, outlaw or original road car (note I do not have the original seats, door trims etc). I’m selling because I’m now using my GT3 for racing & simply can’t keep everything….

Registration MR998 (Victoria – paid to 14/12/17)
VIN WP0ZZZ91ZBS101810
Engine number 6312052

Price is $88,000 OBO.

Vale Brian Reed

16-Dec-2016  Alice McKenzie

It is with great sadness that we have learned today of the sudden passing of Brian `Brique’ Reed last night. One of the original legends of Targa Tasmania, Brian, along with close friend John Emery, were very well known at Targa Tasmania for their quick-witted humour and in depth knowledge of the myriad of cars that made up the field in commentating at each start and finish of the event. After a nine year absence from the microphone, Brian and John returned to Targa Tasmania earlier this year to help celebrate the 25th Anniversary running of the event, seeing the cars off once again at the Official Start in their traditional green Targa blazers and sharing their fantastic stories with the Targa family at various functions.

Brian will be sadly missed by everyone in the Targa family and we wish to pass on our sincere condolences to Brian’s family and friends.

Targa Technical Regulations V2 update

08-Jun-2016  Alice McKenzie

As we do each year after Targa Tasmania, our Safety & Technical Team (STT) discuss any changes required to be implemented for the following year. As custodians of Targa Tasmania, it is in the interest of all to ensure that the event can continue in as safe a manner as possible. Furthermore, the event works tirelessly to ensure that it can meet and exceed the expectations of not only the local authorities but also the local communities, whose support is vital to the sustainability of the event. This process has been updated in the past 12 months to also include the recommendations from the Coronial Inquest and the provisions of the use of the CAMS Tarmac Rally Standing Regulations (TRSR), which were re-introduced to Targa this year.

Please click the link to download the updated technical regulations to be used from Targa High Country later this year. Changes are highlighted in grey for easy reference.
