Lauckes take big Thoroughbred Trophy win

It was only a small field, but the Shannons Thoroughbred Trophy was just as hard fought as any class in Targa Tasmania.

It was only a small field, but the Shannons Thoroughbred Trophy was just as hard fought as any class in Targa Tasmania.

After six tough days it was Mark and Rosina Laucke who came out on top, driving their 1974 Porsche Carrera RS to a convincing victory, having taken the lead on day five.

Bob Fisher and Louise Paul lead the event from the first day in their 1967 Triumph TR4a, and by the end of day three they had built up an advantage over nearly six minutes.

But problems then saw them drop considerable time, moving the Lauckes into a lead that they would not surrender.

In third place was the Targa Tasmania Flag Car, a 1975 Alfa Spider driven by John Keating and Peter O’Reilly, who were thrilled to lead the field away on each and every leg of this year’s event.

“We’re tickled pink – this is our first Targa Tasmania and we’ve had a marvellous time,” Mark Laucke said.

“We’re on the top step of the podium and that’s just brilliant.

“The car’s a former London to Sydney Marathon car, so it’s very well built. It’s been retired for a long time – we dusted it off and made a few minor changes, which has basically made it bullet-proof and it survived this event superbly well.”
