Toby Gill takes thrilling Modern win

Only three seconds separated Toby Gill and Nathan Reeves after the first day of competition, but after that Gill, driving a Mitsubishi Lancer, extended that advantage bit by bit.

After day two he was 26 seconds clear of Reeves’ Subaru WRX STI, but Reeves bounced back on the final day and led the competition by seven seconds with just the run up Mt Buller to finish.

However, Gill was superb on the final test, setting an incredible time that eventually won him the 4WD Showroom class by just three seconds.

“This is brilliant, I am so stoked,” Gill said.

“We just didn’t think it was going to happen, particularly given there was only seven seconds in it coining into the last stage.”

A former Victorian Rally Champion, Reeves has switched from gravel to tarmac in recent seasons and has made the switch seamlessly.

Max Williams pushed hard throughout in his Lancer Evo X, shuffling Adam Spence and his Nissan GTR out of the top three to eventually take third place.

Spence was happy to win the battle of the Nissans, proving quicker than Josh Hilton’s similar GTR over the duration of the rally.
