Siddins takes control in Shannons Classic GT

It’s been another great day for Jon Siddins and his 1970 Datsun 240Z on Day 4 in the Shannons Classic GT class, as he extended his lead over the rest of the field to over five minutes.

There has, however, been a change in the minor placings, with Keith Callinan in a 1977 Ford Escort RS1800 putting in a strong run home after the lunch break to move into second.

Callinan claimed second from Kim Barwick on the final stage of the day, the 17.47km Rosebery stage. He leads Barwick by just 19 seconds.

For the leader Siddins, he is surprised at the gap with two days remaining.

“We didn’t expect to have such a big lead at this stage of the event,” Siddins said.

“It’s a shame some of the top contenders have dropped out, but at least it’s given us a good buffer if anything happens.”

“We can now afford to back off a little and preserve our tyres a bit,” Siddins added.
