Still anybody's Targa in TSD Trophy

Brian and Justin Marshall have finished the penultimate day of Targa Tasmania with a slender four point lead in the Budget TSD Trophy competition.

Brian and Justin Marshall have finished the penultimate day of Targa Tasmania with a slender four point lead in the Budget TSD Trophy competition.

Driving a 2011 Volkswagen Polo GTI, they put in a near flawless display to head the Alfa Romeo GT of Gerard Knapp and Roger Campbell.

“I’ve done about eight or nine events and I’ve never known it to be this close with less than 10 points separating the top three,” Knapp said.

“It’s extremely tight and you have to be super accurate and gauge your finish of a stage to the 10th of a second.

“We’re only four points behind, which equates to one second on a stage.

“We haven’t worried too much about the opposition – we’re just racing against the clock.

“There are few really technical stages on the last day, so the team which wins will be the one which is most on the ball.”

In third place, and 30 points ahead of their nearest rival, is Darryl and Andrew Marshall’s Falcon Ute, with last year’s winners Alan and Heather Gluyas fourth.

There’s a tie for equal fifth, with Neil Wrigley and Chris Neilsen (Porsche) locked together with the Ford Escort of Gerry Bashford and Bob Watson.

The Japanese pairing of Hisao Emi and Kohei Kusaka are seventh in their pretty little Toyota Corolla Levin.
